Lesley Bright
Lesley Bright is a Brisbane-based, self-taught textile artist whose practice transforms reclaimed materials into character-filled sculptural wildlife. Working with vintage and recycled fabrics, beads, and thread, Bright creates contemporary faux taxidermy that celebrates nature through softness, sustainability, and story.
Her works — including Mavis the Magpie, Izzy the Ibis, and a growing cast of avian personalities — are carefully hand-stitched and mounted on recycled timber plinths. Each sculpture is built through layered fabric and expressive detail, allowing the bird’s character to emerge through texture, posture, and subtle gesture. No two are identical; each carries its own temperament.
By reimagining traditional taxidermy in textile form, Bright replaces preservation with reinvention. Instead of presenting wildlife as trophy, she offers it as companion — animated, approachable, and gently theatrical. The visible stitching honours the handmade process, while the use of repurposed materials reinforces her commitment to sustainable art practice.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Brisbane and was recently awarded First Prize in 3D Art at a local gallery competition. Collectors are drawn to the warmth and personality of her sculptures, as well as their accessible scale and pricing.
Through careful construction and imaginative reinterpretation, Lesley Bright gives new life to forgotten materials — creating spirited, sustainable works that bring humour, charm, and a touch of the wild indoors.
Mavis the Magpie, Izzy the Ibis, and other textile sculptures are currently on display at The Brisbane Gallery.
