Annica Malmkvist
Annica Malmkvist is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice celebrates landscape, atmosphere, and what she describes as “natural joy for your walls.” Working primarily in painting, Malmkvist creates uplifting, colour-driven works that reflect her deep connection to place and the restorative power of the natural environment.
Her compositions are expansive yet immersive — open skies, layered terrain, and botanical elements rendered with warmth and expressive clarity. Rather than simply depicting landscape, Malmkvist evokes the emotional experience of being within it. Through confident colour relationships and gestural mark-making, she captures light, movement, and the quiet optimism of wide horizons.
In Skylands, earth and atmosphere meet in a sweeping meditation on openness and possibility. The work feels both grounding and expansive, inviting viewers into a moment of pause beneath a vast sky.
By contrast, Don’t Eat the Mushrooms introduces a playful yet slightly cautionary botanical narrative. Beneath its vibrant palette lies a subtle tension between beauty and instinct, innocence and awareness — a reminder of nature’s complexity and the stories embedded within even the smallest forms.
Malmkvist’s work balances vibrancy with accessibility. Her paintings bring warmth and energy into contemporary interiors while maintaining a thoughtful dialogue with the natural world.
Skylands and Don’t Eat the Mushrooms are currently on display at The Brisbane Gallery as part of ESCAPE, inviting viewers to reconnect with land, light, and emotional retreat.
